Maybe you’ve tried a trainer, or three, and your dog still won’t listen the way you need them to.

Here’s the truth nobody tells you: that’s not a training problem.

After 40-plus years working with dogs, if there’s one thing I’ve learned watching thousands of them, it’s that learned Obedience and Connection are not the same thing.

And almost everyone’s been taught to chase the wrong one.

I’ve worked with dogs who learned every command in the book.

Sit, Stay, Come, Down, Heel. All perfect, in the living room.

Take them outside, and the second something surprises them, all of it disappears.

Why? Because commands are repetitions that any dog can learn if you spend enough time repeating them. 

Connection is something a dog decides to give you.

A dog that trusts you reads your energy and doesn’t need six commands to handle a stranger at the door.

They just look at you, see that you’ve got it handled, and relax.

A dog that’s only ever been drilled on commands has no idea what to do the moment the script runs out.

That’s the whole reframe.

Behavior problems, barking, pulling, not listening, most of the time, they’re not obedience failures.

They’re communication breakdowns.

Your dog is either misreading you, or you’re misreading them.

So here’s what I want you to try today.

Before your next walk, before you even clip on the leash, just notice your own energy.

Are you rushed? Frustrated already? Nervous? Calm?

Your dog knows the answer before you do.

And it’s driving more of their behavior than any learned command ever will.

That one shift, learning to read your own energy and your dog’s, is the foundation everything else in my library builds on.
