4 Things Your Dog Needs

4 Things Every Dog Needs

4 Things Your Dog Needs. Miss One, and Behavior Falls Apart.

If your dog is barking, chewing, pulling, or just seems restless all the time, before you blame the breed, or the training, or yourself, ask this instead: is my dog actually getting what they need?

After 40-plus years working with dogs, I’ve found it always comes back to the same four things.

Every dog needs them. No exceptions.

First, physical release.

Real exercise, not just a walk around the block on a tight leash.

A dog with pent-up energy is a dog who’s going to find their own outlet, and you probably won’t like the one they pick.

Second, mental challenge.

A tired body isn’t the same as a tired mind.

Dogs need to problem-solve, sniff, and work for things.

A bored dog gets creative, and creative usually means destructive.

Third, emotional structure.

Rules and boundaries, consistently applied.

Not harshness – structure.

A dog without any idea what’s expected of them is an anxious dog, even if they look calm on the surface.

And fourth, exposure to the world.

Socialization isn’t just a puppy thing you check off once.

Dogs need ongoing, positive exposure to people, places, and other dogs to stay confident instead of reactive.

Physical release. Mental challenge. Emotional structure. Exposure to the world.

Miss one, and you’ll usually see it surface as an unwanted behavior.

Get all four right, and most of what you’re dealing with right now starts to resolve on its own.

Be aware, be confident.

Bye for now.
